So right. Listen I feel ashamed for not knowing that Johnny Cash was in a superband with Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings. These guys are all well respected country songwriters and for good reason but this cover they do of Jimmy Webb’s 1977 track Highwayman is something else! ( I never even knew this was a cover until writing this)
The first time I heard this I was stunned by 1) not knowing it and 2) for how sick it actually is. The song gives each member of the band enough time to shine, all of them telling stories of different characters of a highwayman, a sailor and a damn builder but when the song slows down and we get introduced to Johnny Cash’s verse that I love the most “I’ll fly a starship across the universe divide, and when I reach the other side I’ll find a place to rest my spirit if I can perhaps I may become a highwayman again”
Did they cover this song as a callback to their younger days? As when they started making music the world was a much different place, and coming together they can reconcile on that.
The Highwaymen version of the song adds so much to it, it’s a tune and I love it, ive listened to this at least a thousand times by now and I’m not bored of it.
Check it out and if you need any more tracks from the Highwaymen check out American Remains and Silver Stallion🔥
